The Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has directed the M. S. Shanmugham, District Collector and other officials to expedite flood relief works and reach relief materials and amount to people quickly.
He said this while reviewing the flood relief works in Thanjavur district through video conferencing on Friday.
M. K.Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister, Malathi, Chief Secretary, were present at Chennai while Mr. Shanmugham, C. Suresh Kumar, District Revenue Officer, Shanthi, Regional Director of Municipal Administration and P.Loganathan, Joint Director of Agriculture were present at Thanjavur during the video conferencing.
The Collector said that the sum of Rs. 29.40 crore given as flood relief by the government has been received by the district administration and relief works have been taken up. The district received 485 mms more than the average rainfall this year. As desilting works were taken up using the amount of Rs. 4.75 crore given by the government, flood was controlled to some extent.
However paddy crop on 27,695 hectares as damaged during the rain. Samba and Thaladi were raised on 1,38,000 hectares. Nineteen per cent of the paddy on total covered area has been damaged in rain. A sum of Rs. 10,000 is given for a hectare of fully damaged paddy crop in the district as relief. For other crops, a sum of Rs. 7,500 per hectare is given. Eleven lives were lost in the rain in the district. A sum of Rs. 22 lakh was provided to the kin of the deceased as relief. A sum of Rs. 93.10 lakh was given as relief to 7,724 partly damaged houses while Rs. 10.40 lakh was given for 208 houses fully damaged in the rain.

TIRUVARUR: The Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi held discussions with the District Collector M.Chandrasekaran and other officials regarding flood relief works taken up in the district through video conferencing on Friday.
M. Chandrasekaran briefed the Chief Minister about the works going on in various affected areas. The Deputy Chief Minister M. K. Stalin and Chief Secretary Malathi listened to him from Chennai.
Mr. Chandrasekaran said that 32 lives were lost in rain in the district. A sum of Rs. 64 lakh has been given as solatium to the kin of the deceased. With respect to paddy, crop on 80,017 hectares was damaged. The yield loss in these fields was more than fifty per cent. A sum of Rs. 48 crore has been released for paying compensation to the farmers whose crops were affected to Thanjavur and Kumbakonam Central Co-operative Banks. A total of 21,197 huts were partly damaged in the district while 1451 were fully damaged. Compensation is being paid to them.
