More than three years after a case was registered against former Minister and AIADMK MLA of Tiruchi West M. Paranjothi on a complaint from a woman doctor, the police have filed the charge-sheet before the Judicial Magistrate Court – IV here.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Srirangam Range, the investigating officer probing the case, filed the charge-sheet on Wednesday. The case has been committed to the Additional Mahila Court from the Judicial Magistrate Court for trial. The next hearing is slated on May 15.

The Government Hospital police station here had booked a case against Mr. Paranjothi in December 2011 when he was Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments on a direction from the Judicial Magistrate Court – IV.

The case was booked based on a complaint preferred by Dr. Rani of Tiruchi who claimed that she was Paranjothi’s second wife. The doctor had claimed that Mr. Paranjothi had grabbed money and other valuables from her on various occasions and accused him of threatening her. The case was booked under Indian Penal Code Sections 493 (cohabitation caused by a man deceitfully inducing a belief of lawful marriage) 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating) 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation), 294 (b) (uttering obscene words) 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and Section 4 of Women Harassment Act.

Mr. Paranjothi was elected from the Tiruchi West Assembly constituency in the bypoll held in October 2011 and made Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments thereafter. Consequent to the case booked against him, Mr. Paranjothi resigned citing personal reasons in December 2011. He also stepped down from his position in the party as the Tiruchi urban district secretary.
