Laws against ragging have created awareness among the student community to desist from this anti-social activity. However, taking into consideration the gravity of this anti-social menace , more stringent laws should be enforced, said R. Navamurthy, District Munsif and Judicial Magistrate, Tirumayam.
Presiding over the ‘Anti-ragging campaign' organised by the Tirumayam Taluk Legal Services Committee at the Mount Zion College of Engineering and Technology at Lena Vilakku near here recently, Mr. Navamurthy said that as per the provisions of the existing laws, ragging was an offence attracting a rigorous imprisonment of up to two years and a fine of Rs. 5,000.
Mr. Navamurthy said that ragging degraded social order and that anti-ragging rules should be made stronger, with more stringent punishment, he said.
Mr. Navamurthy, who is also the Chairman off the Taluk Legal Services Committee, said that the Committee has been organising several awareness campaigns in higher educational institutions, with a view to sensitising the students to the evils of ragging.
