The Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam has urged the State government to include the Cauvery irrigated areas in Karur district in Delta region.
A resolution was adopted at a meeting of the sangam held under the chairmanship of its district vice-president G. Raja here on Sunday.
S. Shanmugasundaran, district secretary, said that although several areas in Kulithalai and Krishnarayapuram taluks had been irrigated by the Cauvery, these areas had not been recognised as the Delta region similar to the districts such as Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Tiruchi. It denied the opportunity for farmers to avail benefits of the government during drought period.
There was a proposal to bring all these areas under the official records of the delta region. The demand had been pending for so long. Hence, the government should take steps to consider the demand of farmers.
Another resolution said several areas in Karur district had been hit because of poor rainfall last season. Similar was the situation in the last two years.
Hence, Karur district should be declared as drought affected so as to take relief and rehabilitation steps to mitigate drought situation. There were reports that people had been forced to wait for several days to get drinking water. Since the situation was poor in rural areas, the administration should step in immediately to take action for the systematic supply of water to the people.
