Birth anniversary of King Perumpidugu celebrated

Ministers, officials, leaders of political parties pay respects

The 1,342nd birth anniversary of King Perumpidugu Mutharayar was celebrated by the State government here on Tuesday with his statue garlanded by Ministers, government officials, members of various political parties and other organisations.

On behalf of the Central government, Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Pon. Radhakrishnan garlanded the statue of ‘Perumpidugu’ Mutharayar installed at Othakadai junction and paid his respects.

Earlier in the day, Tourism Minister Vellamandi N. Natarajan, Minister for Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare S. Valarmathi garlanded the statue of the King Mutharayar here.

They were followed by Collector K.S. Palanisamy, AIADMK Rajya Sabha member T. Rathinavel, Tamil Nadu Mutharayar Munnetra Sangam founder president R. Viswanathan, Veera Mutharayar Munnetra Sangam founder president K. Selvakumar and local body representatives besides public from various parts of the district who also paid their respects.

Former DMK Minister K.N. Nehru accompanied by his party functionaries, Naam Tamizhar Katchi leader Seeman, members of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam also garlanded the statue.

A thick security blanket was thrown in the city in view of the celebrations with teams of police personnel deployed at vantage spots as a precautionary measure to avert any untoward incidents.

Barricades were installed around the statue and movement of buses passing through Othakadai junction were diverted. The statue of Mutharayar was garlanded in different parts of the district.
