BHEL gets three Vishwakarma awards

Employees of BHEL, Tiruchi, have won three Vishwakarma National Awards – two class ‘A' and one class ‘C' – for their innovative suggestions leading to cost reduction, and higher productivity, safety and quality of products.

Recognition

In recognition of the suggestions that also obviated the need to import products and paved way for energy conservation and technology upgrade, 13 employees were honoured with the 'Vishwakarma Rashtriya Puraskars' for 2010', by the Union Minister of Labour & Employment Mallikarjun Kharge at New Delhi recently. With these awards, the number of Vishwakarma awards won by BHEL has crossed 20.

The Vishwakarma Rashtriya Puraskar Class ‘A' award won by a team consisting of S. Paramasivam, Assistant Engineer; M. Balu, Artisan; T.Muthukumar, Artisan; and K. Janakiraman, Artisan of Tubular Production also carries a cash component of Rs.75,000.

They designed and developed roller to hold and move the tube for bending operations in vertical offset press (VOP), whereby productivity could be increased.

The same award, consisting of the exact cash component and certificates, was given to P. Krishnan, Assistant Engineer; S. Arun Kumar, Artisan; Thanigiyarasu, Artisan; S. Arun Kumar, Artisan; and R. Manikandan, Artisan, working in Valves Production, for designing and developing user friendly plunger without thread owing to which cycle time of hydraulic test could be reduced.

The Vishwakarma Rashtriya Puraskar Class ‘C' award accounting for cash component of Rs.25,000 and certificates was in recognition of design and development of universal fixtures for fabrication of palm and planking plate assembly by using scrap material.

The team of Lucky Gaur, Assistant Engineer; V. Narayanasari, Master Technican; K. Ilavarasan, General Technician; and D. Selvaraju, General Technician, was behind the method of eliminating conventional welding practice for welding aluminium joints.

National Safety Award: The Human Resource Development Centre of BHEL, Tiruchi, also won the prestigious National Safety Awards for the year 2010.

At a function organised by the Directorate General Factory Advice Services & Labour institutes, Ministry of Labour, Govt. of India, Mr. Mallikarjun Kharge gave away the award to A Venkatachalapathy, Additional General Manager, Safety Management, BHEL Tiruchi.

The Central Government instituted this award in 1965 to accord recognition to good safety performance on the part of industrial undertakings and to stimulate and maintain the interest of both the managements and the workers in accident prevention programmes.
