The Bharathidasan University has constituted two technical committees to discuss issues concerning the Bachelor of Science (BS) programme.

They will meet here on Saturday to review the syllabus followed for the BS (Electronics) and BS (Computer Science). They will study whether the students can be given the recognition equal to the Bachelor of Engineering. Experts from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) and the Anna University have been romped for the review.

The meeting assumes significance in the background of reports of confusion over the release of examination results of BS students, who studied in different affiliated and autonomous colleges of the university between 2010-11 and 2013-14, and confusion raised by some quarters that whether those completed BS course can be admitted in M.E and other courses.

The four-year programme was introduced by the university in 2010-11 and subsequently five colleges in Tiruchi and Perambalur, including two autonomous colleges offered the programme. It was then said that the students, who underwent four-year BS programme, could qualify for joining Master of Engineering, M. Tech., and other programmes.

It was said that they could pursue M.Sc directly from second year as a lateral entry method after completion of BS.

However, the varsity chose not to continue the programme from 2011-12 and sent circular to that effect to all affiliated colleges reportedly on the ground that it might devalue the BE degrees. But the first batch students were allowed to continue in the programme. Now, they have completed four years of studies. It is said that a few institutions have not released the results, apparently seeking clarifications to admit BS graduates.

When contacted, V.M. Muthu Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Bharathidasan University, told The Hindu on Wednesday that the university had released the results of BS course.

However, it was very much aware of the issue. All facts, figures, and the commitment offered to the students when the BS course was introduced would be placed before the technical committees.

There was hope that the issue would be solved without affecting anyone. If needed, the university would give special permission to extend the deadline for PG courses to accommodate BS students in higher studies, he said.
