People should be aware of the Right to Information Act to get information about the various welfare schemes being implemented by the Government, said Collector T.Soundiah here on Friday.
The Collector, who inaugurated an awareness campaign on the Right to Information Act 2005 for members of the women self help groups (SHGs) of Tiruchi district organised by the Anna Institute of Management, said that there were three lakh members in the women SHGs in the district and pointed out that they could get all information from the Government about various welfare schemes, etc., and this would be very helpful for rural development.
Mr.Soundiah, who released a booklet on the RI Act 2005, wanted the women SHGs to function as a bridge between the Government and the people and render services for the overall development. The Government officials are bound to provide the required information under the RI Act, he said.
Rajamani Suseelan, Programme Director of Anna Institute of Management, S.N.Venkatesan, management consultant, Madhanamohan, management project director and others attended the meeting.
Assistance distributed
Welfare assistance to the tune of Rs. 41.63 lakhs were distributed to 597 beneficiaries at a mass contact programme held at Ammachathram village in Maniyankurichi panchayat in Marungapuri block recently.
Collector T. Soundiah presided over the camp during which action was immediately initiated on 89 out of the 140 petitions received. Mr. Soundiah said a sum of Rs. 40 crore had been given as educational loan to 8,000 students in the district till now this year.
