Even as the district authorities are expected to implement the recent government order on making fare meters compulsory for autorickshaws in the city, the Consumer Protection Council, Tamil Nadu, roped in a manufacturer of the fare meters from Coimbatore to display different types of the equipment in the city on Thursday.

“We have organised a display of different types of meters for autorickshaws at the Poomalai complex,” said S. Pushpavanam, Secretary, Consumer Protection Council, Tamil Nadu, who has been campaigning for introduction of meter fare system in the city.

According to Mr. Pushpavanam, autorickshaw drivers unions, during a recent tripartite meeting on the issue, had complained of non-availability of meters and trained mechanics to calibrate the same. Hence, the council had offered to rope in suppliers and mechanics to facilitate the implementation of system. On Friday, a few drivers had a look at the meters and were willing to fix them, Mr. Pushpavanam said and added that the meters would be on display at the Poomalai Complex on Saturday too, he said.

After the tripartite meeting, transport officials have been maintaining that a public announcement would be made soon fixing a date from which the fare system will be enforced.

Mr. Pushpavanam hoped that the transport authorities would come out with the announcement soon.
