Auto drivers took out a rally in the city on Tuesday urging the State government to implement their charter of demands. The rally which started from Vestry School roundabout culminated at the district collectorate.
The auto drivers, affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions, wanted the government to provide adequate time for them to fix meters in their vehicles. They wanted the authorities to convene a meeting to fix new rates keeping in mind the periodic increase in the rates of petrol and diesel. Instead of fixing a uniform rate across Tamil Nadu, the auto drivers wanted the rates to be fixed based on the respective district’s nature as was in vogue in Karnataka, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh. Supply of petrol and diesel at subsidised rates and issue of free house site pattas to auto drivers were among their other demands.
Later, theypresented a petition to the district administration.
