An automated Airport Operations Control Centre (AOCC) will soon be put in place at the Tiruchi international airport by bringing together important stakeholders for advanced planning and optimum utilisation of available resources to benefit travellers.

Airlines, ground handlers, Customs, Immigration and security agencies would be brought under a common platform under the AOCC which aims at providing hassle free service to passengers arriving at Tiruchi from various overseas and domestic destinations.

Equipment required for the AOCC has been acquired and training is currently underway for a team of Tiruchi airport staff prior to commissioning the centre.

Tiruchi is one among the 10 airports in the country where the AOCC is to be set up by the Airports Authority of India.

The centre would be connected to the Air Traffic Services automation system at the airport from where it would collect real time data of flights and their estimated time of arrival at the Tiruchi airport and update them in the FIDS (Flight Information Display System).

The AOCC would allot the bay number on which the aircraft should arrive upon landing and the same would be conveyed to respective airlines and ground handling agencies in advance. In addition to this, it would also allot the check-in counters and conveyor belt number for collection of baggage by passengers upon arrival.

Passengers would be provided with the information even while they were on board the aircraft by the respective airlines before landing.

The real time data obtained by the AOCC would enable in advanced planning through collaborative decision making and optimum utilisation of available resources in the terminal building and in the apron to eventually help passengers as well as the stakeholders at the airport. It would help the Customs and immigration authorities to plan and deploy manpower accordingly.

The waiting time in queue for the passengers would be reduced through this system, Airport Director B.C. H. Negi said.

Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Pune, Trivandrum, Calicut, Jaipur, Mangalore and Guwahati are the other airports where the AOCC would be in place. The AOCC at Chennai airport has been commissioned. The AOCC of the 10 airports would be networked for exchange of information, airport officials said.

Barring the Jet Airways, the rest are international airlines operating flights to and from Tiruchi to Colombo, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Dubai.
