AIADMK councillors in the Thanjavur Municipal Council on Friday alleged that the quality of concrete roads laid using the sum of Rs. 25 crore, allotted during millennium celebrations of the Big Temple here was ‘very poor.'
Swaminathan, AIADMK councillor, said the concrete road laid in his ward has developed pot holes and cracks and the cement was pealing off. He also said work has not been taken up in many roads in the town though the Commissioner promised that cement road will be laid in these places after the millennium celebrations that were held in September.
He also complained about water stagnation and drainage near Sivaganga Park and fish market. “Sanitation has come down in the town. There is every possibility of outbreak of an epidemic what with rain continuously lashing the town for the past two days,” Mr. Swaminthan said.
Shanmugha Prabhu of AIADMK said Rs.60 lakh was allotted for laying concrete road in ward number 50.
However, the road laid covers only quarter of the total length.
Rajeswaran, another AIADMK councillor demanded the Council as to when the roads matching international standards would be laid in the town under the Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Development programme. To this, Nadarajan, Municipal Commissioner said that a sum of Rs.3 crore has already been allotted for the same.
Thenmozhi Jayabal, Chairperson of Thanjavur Municipal Council presided over the meeting.
