Supporters of former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on Wednesday observed a fast here demanding Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) enquiry into the death of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.
A large number of his supporters including women from different parts of Tiruchi, Manapparai, Musiriri, Mannachanallur, Thuraiyur, Lalgudi, Samayapuram and other areas participated in it. The fast that began around 9 am concluded at 5 pm.
Former Minister T.P. Poonatchi inaugurated the fast.
Though the Deepa Peravai had not openly extended support to the fast, supporters of Ms.Deepa, niece of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, also participated in the fast.
Though no sitting MLA of AIADMK from Tiruchi district took part in the fast, several former MLAs, former district secretaries, former Corporation councillors were among those who participated in it.
According to a police report, 1,300 persons observed fast. Of them 300 were women.
Mr. Poonatchi said that many questions regarding hospitalisation of Ms. Jayalalithaa and the treatment given to her remained to be answered. There were contradictions in the medical bulletins and statements issued by the doctors and the State government. The people had several genuine doubts over the untimely death of their beloved leader.
The State government could not escape from the issue by issuing statements. There was a need for bringing out the truth by a detailed enquiry into the death of Ms. Jayalalithaa. So, the State and Central governments should ask the CBI to bring out the truth.
Thanjavur
In Thanjavur, the fast was held in front of the Head Post Office and it was led by advocate M.S. Anand. Among those who participated were the AIADMK local leaders Pannavayal Tyagarajan, Poovai Kaliyamurthy, Veerakanal Marimuthu besides members of the MGR Amma Deepa Peravai. The speakers demanded a comprehensive inquiry by a sitting Supreme Court judge into the circumstances leading to the death of Jayalalithaa.
In Kumbakonam, the fast was observed near the Gandhi Park area. Former Tiruvidaimarudur MLA Thavamani led the fast. The AIADMK Fishermen’s wing State secretary Neelangarai Munusamy participated.
In Tiruvarur, more than 500 cadre, led by Nagarajan, observed the fast near the New Railway Station. Women and cadre from Tiruthuraipoondi, Mannargudi, Muthupettai, Ullikkottai, Kandithampettai, Kudavasal and Nidamangalam took part in the fast.
