Academics from diverse subject backgrounds have floated Tiruchi Philosophy Club as a platform for involving people with philosophical inclinations in deliberations on major factors influencing humanity.

The first meeting of the club on Saturday encompassed a discussion on the theme: Philosophy: What, Why & How?

The discussion anchored by Dr. Noel Irudhayaraj, former head, Department of English, Bharathidasan University, and Abhishek Kumar, Assistant Professor, Bharathidasan Institute of Management, witnessed lively interactions on a range of topics starting from the invention of wheel and the Holy Bible to the scope for people to attain the level of Greek philosopher Socrates deriving benefits of technology and civilization.

The audience comprised professors from the fields of literature, management, history, and mathematics apart from executives from BHEL, and students from various colleges in the city.

Prof. Noel began his talk by querying construct of mind and individual egocentricity, and described the inescapable nature of egocentric predicament of humanity in its course of decision making.

The club will fill a felt gap in the cultural milieu of the city, he said.

Prof. Abhishek explained that some form of philosophy always surrounds mankind in the form of proverbs, myths and popular philosophical phrases. Philosophy, he said, was knowledge of all knowledge, art of all arts and science confined to no particular field.

He further elaborated that as components within philosophy became concrete and measurable, it left the precincts of philosophy and established itself as an independent study like algebra, astronomy, and metaphysics.
