Sepoy cremated

The mortal remains of Sepoy Ilavarasan (27) who died in an avalanche in Kashmir was consigned to flames with military honours at his native village Keezhaiyur Kannanthankudi near Orathanad in this district on Wednesday.

Agriculture Minister R. Duraikannu paid floral tributes to the body and handed over a cheque for ₹ 20 lakh as the State Government’s solatium to his family members. Ilavarasan and some of his fellow soldiers of his regiment were buried in an avalanche that hit the Gurez sector in Kashmir region bordering Pakistan on January 26.

Late on Tuesday, Ilavarasan's body arrived from New Delhi and was received by Collector A. Annadurai at the Air Force Station here. It was taken to his native village in an army vehicle. The body was then handed over to his parents on Wednesday.
