A vacant site belonging to the Southern Railway has come in handy for traders to dump their garbage. The site, located on the Station Road in the heart of the town, though fenced by the Railway Department, is being trespassed by traders to dump waste materials that range from polythene waste, plastic covers and glass bottles. A row of pavement vendors have set up their stalls on the border of the vacant site, and, obviously, they throw all decayed vegetables, fruits and plantain leaves into the site, resulting in a foul smell.

It is high time that the entire area is cleaned and strict action taken against those dumping garbage into it. A similar problem existed at the Teppakulam area in Tiruchi city and the City Corporation took due action in this regard, it may be recalled.

Tirumullaivasal is a coastal village about 18 km from Sirkali. By virtue of its picturesque scenery, the Coleroon Panchayat Union had, way back in 1977 constructed a guest house on the shores of Tirumullaivasal. The objective was to promote tourism in this rural area. But, the guest house has been lying in disuse.

The facility has suffered extensive damage owing to corrosion by sea breeze and also during the tsunami. The structure is so weak that local villagers want its immediate demolition. “With the tsunami waves having caused extensive damage to the building, the possibility of re-constructing it is quite remote. It should be immediately demolished,” say the local residents of Tirumullaivasal whose houses had been destroyed by sea-erosion last year.
