Toy making workshop
A soft-toy making workshop was recently organised by the Department of Fashion Technology and Costume Designing of Shrimati Indira Gandhi College and the Entrepreneurship Development Cell, Government of Tamil Nadu for students of various disciplines. Trainers taught 200 participants how to make soft toys using acrylic fur and cloth in the day-long workshop that was held at the R.V. Auditorium of the college. Students learned to cut patterns and stitch dolls like teddy bears, ‘Looie dogs’, and rabbits. The craft could also be developed as a small business opportunity, as the cuddly toys have a huge market, said the workshop’s organisers.
Watershed management
Watershed is not mere hydrological unit but also a socio-political-ecological entity which plays a crucial role in determining food, social, and economical security and provides livelihood support to rural people. Geoinformatics offers several methods for automated watershed delineation using Digital Elevation Model (DEM), extracting and modelling the basins and basin characteristics like basin geometry, geomorphology, flood, quality and quantity aspects. In this context, the Department of Geography of the Bharthidasan University hosted a five-day workshop on Geoinformatics for Watershed Management, focusing on the principles of watershed management, integrated watershed, application of Geoinformatics in watershed management, and watershed modelling. V. M. Muthukumar, Vice-Chancellor, Bharathidasan University, inaugurated the workshop. He urged researchers to come up with solutions for effective watershed management.
Think Quest 2017 winners
Srimad Andavan Arts and Science College won the overall trophy in ‘Think Quest 2017,’ an inter-collegiate competition organised by the Post Graduate Department of Computer Science, Nehru Memorial College. More than 100 students from various colleges participated in competitions such as dumb charades, short film making, web design, and treasure hunt. Lakshman Pillai, CEO, LPCube Systems Pvt Ltd, delivered the valedictory address.
