Burglars reportedly took away 60 sovereigns of gold jewellery, Rs. 50,000, and 750 grams of silver articles from the house of a retired sub-inspector of police at Palaniappa Nagar near Bikshandarkoil on the city’s outskirts.

The intrusion of burglars through the front door and the theft was noticed on Wednesday morning.

The owner Sundararajan, who had retired a year ago, was sleeping alone on the terrace when the crime had taken place. His other family members were away for a function. Superintendent of Police Lalitha Lakshmi and senior officials visited the spot and conducted enquiries. The investigating team has sought the services of fingerprint experts. The Kollidam Tollgate police have registered a case. This is the second major incident of burglary in the limits of Kollidam Tollgate recent months. During March, burglers broke open an Automated Teller Machine of the Punjab National Bank’s (PNB) Bikshandarkoil branch and looted Rs. 21 lakh cash.
