A total of 29 students have been operated for various ailments under the ‘Ilam Sirar Irudhaya Padhukappu Thittam’ in the district at the Kavery Medical Centre and Hospital (KMC), an empanelled hospital here, in the last five months.
In all, 110 students have been identified for undergoing surgery under the scheme during the course of the cardiac medical check up conducted at all the schools in the district in the last two years.
Speaking at a function to felicitate the surgeons and the students on Sunday, the State Transport Minister K. N. Nehru highlighted the salient features of the scheme. He said that the students of various classes from Standard I to XII benefited through the programme. The Hospital has also been empanelled for the implementation of the ‘Dr. Kalaignar Health Insurance Scheme’ for which as many as 160 persons have registered their names with the hospital. Of them, surgery had been performed for 10 persons for cardiac, ortho, neuro and uro ailments in the last couple of weeks.
The District Collector T. Soundiah, said that next to Chennai, Tiruchi district accounted for the largest number of beneficiaries under these health schemes. The hospital has been empanelled for these health schemes. Under the ‘Dr. Kalaignar Health Insurance Scheme’, the beneficiaries would undergo super speciality treatment for 51 types of ailments including cardiology, cancer, joint replacement, urology, brain and neuro diseases.
The Managing Director of the hospital, S. Chandrakumar said that early detection and clinical intervention for heart ailments benefited the students. Describing the subsidy-based health scheme as the best health delivery programme being implemented in the state, Dr. Chandrakumar said that the heart ailments pertained mostly to Atrial Septal Defect (ASD); Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD); Mitral valve defects and Patent Ductus Arteriosus.
He particularly appreciated the co-ordinated effort by the state government and the insurance sector for the successful implementation of the programme.
The Medical Director of the hospital, T. Senthil Kumar, said that girls outnumbered boys under the ‘Ilam Sirar Irudhaya padhukappu thittam’. Out of 29 students, 21 were girls.
A surgeon, M. Pitchaiammal said that so far ten aged persons had undergone surgery for cardiac, orthopaedic, neurological and urological ailments at the hospital.
