Over 11,000 police and non–police personnel have been deployed for security duty in the Central Zone for phase–II local body elections to be held on Wednesday.

Seven companies of Maharastra Police and six companies of Tamil Nadu Special Police have been deployed across the zone, comprising Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Perambalur, Tiruvarur, Karur, Ariyalur and Nagapattinam districts, to ensure free and fair polling.

Of the total 7,853 booths 421 have been identified as “sensitive.” Police sources said 277 striking forces and 587 mobile parties have been constituted for the phase-II poll in the eight districts falling under the zone.

All security arrangements have been put in place for phase- II elections to ensure free and fair polling, said the Inspector General of Police, Central Zone, K.C.Mahali.

In Tiruchi district, polls would be held for Thuvakudi municipality; 13 town panchayats including Balakrishnampatti, Kallakudi, Kattuputhur, Lalgudi, Manachanallur, Musiri, Thottiyam and Pullampadi, and eight panchayat unions including Musiri, Thathiengarpet, Thottiyam, Thuraiyur, Uppiliapuram and Lalgudi in phase-II.

The district administration has declared a local holiday on Wednesday for government offices, educational institutions and private firms located in areas where phase-II polling is to be held.
