An intensive fortnight-long training, sponsored jointly by the Agriculture Department and Hans Roever Krishi Vigyan Kendra, was inaugurated here on Wednesday. The training programme aims at increasing productivity in cotton and maize for which the district is ideally suited.
Inaugurating the training, Darez Ahmed, District Collector, said the programme aimed at reaching the goal of “Rs. 1 lakh revenue for every hectare of maize or cotton” announced by Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.
In all, 1,150 farmers growing cotton or maize have enrolled their names for the training. It has been planned to bring 350 hectares under cotton and another 750 hectares under maize cultivation so that farmers would be able to earn Rs. 1 lakh on every hectare of land. Soil testing and other services would be available.
The Collector said that a farmer owning agricultural land with a deep borewell would be encouraged to go in for sprinkler irrigation technique. With these small measures, productivity in maize and cotton would go up in the district within a short span of time.
