10-year-jail for man for killing mother

The Principal District and Sessions Judge P. Velmurugan on Tuesday convicted and sentenced a 36-year-old man to undergo 10-year imprisonment for murdering his aged mother in their house at Ariyamangalam area here in April.

Pronouncing the verdict, the judge imposed a fine of Rs. 1,000 on K. Shivaji, a postgraduate. According to the prosecution, Shivaji assaulted his mother K. Bhavani with a log and threw a boulder on her after she refused to give the pension book when he sought it to mobilise money to do doctoral research.

The woman was surviving on the pension of her husband, who was an ex-railway employee, after his demise. The Ariyamangalam police arrested Shivaji, a day after the murder and got him remanded. The charge-sheet was filed in June and the trial was held at the District and Sessions Court.
