Even as the Tiruchi police are engaged in drawing up security for the Srirangam byelection, the central paramilitary companies would arrive here for poll duty soon.
The Election Commission has given its sanction for dispatching 10 companies of paramilitary force personnel for the byelection slated on February 13.
The Tiruchi Rural Police and the Tiruchi City Police have received communication in the regard. Police sources told The Hindu that paramilitary forces personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, and the Border Security Force were expected to arrive in Tiruchi on February 5.
This would be in addition to the Tiruchi police personnel and Tamil Nadu Special Police companies to be deployed for poll duties.
The paramilitary personnel would be posted in the polling stations spread across the constituency that has about 322 polling booths. The paramilitary personnel were also likely to be deployed with the mobile teams ahead of polling, sources said.
As the Srirangam constituency comes under the ambit of both the Tiruchi City Police and Tiruchi Rural Police, personnel of both were involved in drawing up security plans ahead of the bypoll. While 234 booths fall under the ambit of Tiruchi Rural Police, 88 booths come under the Tiruchi City Police.
The constituency which has a total electorate 2.7 lakh voters encompasses 56 panchayats, and one of them – Komangalam – falls under the neighbouring Pudukottai revenue district.
