A demonstration organised by the Youth Congress (YC) to the government Secretariat turned violent on Monday.
The march was organised in protest against the recent arrest of two Dalit women in Thalassery.
The demonstration, which commenced from the Museum junction by around 12 p.m., was blocked by police personnel using barricades that were erected near the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium.
300 activists
The Youth Congress activists, numbering around 300, who were led by State president Dean Kuriakose, attempted to jump over the barricade. The agitation became unruly after a few activists began to hurl stones at the police personnel, prompting the latter to use water cannons and lob tear-gas shells towards the agitators.
While most of the activists fled from the scene, some persisted with their attempts to remove the barricade. However, the agitation was soon subdued, as the police managed to disperse the crowd.
The demonstration left a few injured in the clash. These included Vipin Kumar, a member of the Kerala Armed Police 5{+t}{+h}Battalion, who suffered an injury to his eye.
The Museum police have registered a case against 10 activists, including Mr. Kuriakose. They were arrested and have been remanded to judicial custody.
Arrested and booked
They have been booked under Sections 143, 147, 148, 149, 188, 283 and 332 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertained to various offences including unlawful assembly, rioting, and voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from discharging his duty, an official said.
