The University of Kerala will hand over the responsibility of repairing the women's hostel on its Karyvattom campus to the construction wing of the BSNL. This decision was taken at a meeting of the university Syndicate here on Tuesday.
The meeting decided to increase the daily allowance of students in various sports teams. Within the State, the new allowance would be Rs.150 while it would be Rs.250 for events outside Kerala. The earlier rates were Rs.75 and Rs.100, respectively. The university would write to the government asking that the daily allowance of members of sports teams from affiliated colleges be raised from Rs.75 to Rs.150.
The pension arrears of those aged above 75 would be disbursed immediately. Librarians at the university library, who have the qualifications prescribed by the UGC, would be given salary as per the UGC scales. The salary-related issues of other staff would be brought to the notice of the government.
The Syndicate decided to increase by 20 per cent the salary of all staff at the University Institutes of Technologies and at teacher-education centres. The director of the Centre for Bioinformatics Achuthsankar S. Nair would be given charge as director of the Centre for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics.
It was decided to issue show-cause notices to the Principal and the manager of the Heera College of Engineering, Nedumangad, for admitting students who did not have required qualifications.
The Syndicate discussed the repeated violations of its rules on the part of the P.A. Azeez College of Engineering, Karakulam. It was decided to seek legal opinion on the continued affiliation of the college to the university. It was decided to continue with the suspension of R. Johnson, lecturer in the Department of Psychology. It was decided to award, posthumously, a doctorate in physics to George Varghese who submitted his thesis but passed away before the open defence.
