Women legislators used as human shields: Chandy

March 19, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 12:11 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The Opposition is misleading the people and trying to make political gains over the happenings on March 13 in the Assembly by misusing the laws for the protection of women, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said.

“No one will believe the allegations raised by the women legislators belonging to the LDF. The whole world has seen what happened on the floor of the House through cameras,” he said replying to queries after the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

On the video

The Chief Minister asked why the Opposition, that displayed over 140 photographs on the happenings, was reluctant to show the video. “We had told on Friday itself that we can jointly view the video of the happenings. Everyone knows why the five legislators were suspended. Those suspended had not questioned it. We avoided more suspension after carefully going through the video,” he said.

Stating that the distribution of sweets by UDF legislators could have been avoided, Mr. Chandy said the distribution of ladoo and destruction of Speaker’s podium by the LDF legislators should be treated differently. The government has an open mind.

“Everything was pre-planned by the Opposition and women LDF legislators were asked to occupy seats in front of the seat assigned to the Finance Minister. Women and children are protected and avoided where there is tension. Here, women legislators were used as human shields”, the Chief Minister said.

To another query, the Chief Minister said he was personally witness to the unfortunate incidents and the Finance Minister presenting the budget. Nothing had taken place as alleged by the women LDF legislators.

“Many had fallen above me and it was not intentional. There was mention about the watch and ward only in the complaint given by the Leader of the Opposition on March 13. The new allegations raised are painful and deplorable,” he added.

On the Facebook post by the KPCC spokesman Pandalam Sudhakaran that the Finance portfolio should be taken over from K. M. Mani, the Chief Minister said it not the stand of the Congress.
