The case involving a godman whose genitals were gashed by a woman in Pettah has taken a curious turn with the woman “retracting” her statement and claiming that the accused was innocent and had been framed.

Representing the accused, Gangeshananda Theerthapadar, defence advocate Sasthamangalam Ajithkumar on Thursday produced a letter, reportedly sent by the woman, at the Vanchiyoor court while moving a bail application for the accused. The letter has been taken on record.

In the letter, which the lawyer claims to have received by Speed Post, the woman claimed that the accused had not attempted to rape her and that she had not chopped his genitals.

Referring to the ‘Swamiji’ as the head of her family, she said he cared for her as a child and had been a motivator in her studies. She accused three former aides of the accused, namely Ayyappadas, Manoj Murali and Ajithkumar, of hatching a conspiracy and instigating her to commit the crime after claiming that the godman had been “looting” money from her parents.

She has accused the police of altering and re-writing her statement. The final statement was written when she was taken for medical examination, after which she was made to sign on the document. The woman added that the final document was neither read by her or read out to her as she “did not know to read Malayalam. She was asked to comply with the instructions and narrate the “made-up story” when she was taken to give her statement before the Magistrate.
