M.S. Sangeetha, 31, a sitting councillor of the city Corporation, allegedly committed suicide in her rented house at Manvila around 11.45 p.m. on Friday night.
The councillor, representing Attipra ward, was an active member of the Democratic Youth Federation of India.
According to the Kazhakuttam police, she had locked the room and hanged herself on the ceiling fan even as her nine-year-old daughter was awake and crying for help. Her husband, Manoj, a lecturer in a government college in the city, who was sleeping in the next room along with their younger son, broke open the door and rushed her to the government medical college hospital. She died at the hospital around 1.30 a.m. on Saturday and after post-mortem her body was cremated in the afternoon.
The Kazhakuttam police have registered a case of unnatural death and are inquiring with her friends and relatives to find out the reason behind the extreme step. The police said they are investigating whether she was undergoing treatment for stress as claimed by her husband.
According to sources in the city Corporation, the deceased was very active in her work as a civic body representative besides carrying out party-related work as vice-president and State committee member of the DYFI. Ms. Sangeetha, a resident of Thripathapuram at Attipra, moved to Kayamkulam after she got married.
“Only a few years back she returned to the city,” said a councillor.
