District Collector Biju Prabhakar here on Thursday said he would go ahead with the plans to set up a residential school at the Sree Chitra Home. The school was being considered at a 79-cent plot now housing the Vanchi Poor Fund building and an LP school.
The residential school would enable students of the Home to walk across to the school and back everyday, Mr. Prabhakar told a press conference.
An impression was being sought to be created by the State Youth Commission that improvements were being considered at the Home after the Commission’s intervention.
“Where was the Commission when the Home was facing all sorts of problems, including the security of woman residents? No one need attempt to take credit for our well-thought-out plans. We are not doing things because we were told to by the Commission,” he said.
Now there was disparity between the residents who were studying and those who went out to work.
There was a clause in the Home’s bylaws which said that if a resident gained employment he should move out of the Home.
Over time, the plan was to shift those who went to work and house them in the Mahila Mandiram.
Measures would be taken to ensure that when each resident left the Home, he or she would have a fixed deposit of Rs.3 lakh in his or her name.
The person concerned would not be able to break the deposit for 10 years but would receive the interest on the same. A scheme wherein each resident who was studying could be directly sponsored by individuals was also under consideration.
All these schemes would be implemented over three years.
