Mayor K. Chandrika said on Friday that the City Corporation will identify land in different parts of the city to set up mini solid waste treatment plants.
After attending a special Cabinet meeting on solid waste management convened by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Ms. Chandrika said the decentralised treatment plants would function on advanced pollution-free technology.
“The meeting discussed immediate steps to be taken to tackle the issue of solid waste management across the State. On our part, the Corporation will identify land to set up mini plants and also work on bringing down the volume of waste transported to Vilappilsala solid waste treatment plant through the ongoing source-level waste treatment project,” Ms. Chandrika said.
The next meeting of the Corporation Council would discuss the Government ordinance on solid waste management which included a clause for imposing extended producer responsibility to make manufacturers responsible for non-biodegradable waste generated from their products.
The Cabinet meeting discussed the findings of the R.V.G. Menon committee that was entrusted with the task of studying advanced waste management technologies available in the country. Officials of the Suchitwa Mission made a presentation on the findings of the study.
Urban Affairs Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty had assured the meeting that a meeting would be held with the Vilappilsala Janakeeya Samithi.
The government would seek time to come up with alternative waste treatment solutions at Vilappilsala, the Mayor quoted Mr. Kunhalikutty as saying.
“Minister for Panchayats M.K. Muneer said plastic recycling units and shredder machines will be installed in more places to tackle the problems posed by plastic wastes,” she said.
