Vilappilsala: Mayor puts onus on State

December 16, 2011 01:34 pm | Updated 01:34 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Thiruvananthapuram Mayor K.Chandrika has said that the State government will be solely responsible for any acts of violence relating to the movement of garbage to the Vilappilsala plant after December 21, the deadline declared by agitators at Vilappil who are demanding closure of the garbage treatment plant there.

At a press meet here on Thursday, Ms. Chandrika said that the only way to stop sending garbage to the plant was to set up at-source treatment facilities in the city. This would require a major change in the attitude of the people of the city. The Chief Minister should urgently intervene in this issue and call a meeting of the agitators to convince them that the movement of garbage to the plant could not be terminated at one go. The Corporation had written to the Chief Minister on this issue, but had received no response, she said.

Award

The Mayor said the Corporation had received an award from the Centre for its execution of the BSUP programme. The award is for ensuring maximum participation of the people in the roll-out of the programme. The award consists of a memento, a citation and a cash prize of Rs. 3 lakh.
