May 11, 2010 04:21 pm | Updated 04:21 pm IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

The Urus festival at Beemapally Dargah Shereef begins on May 16. Beemapally Dargah Shereef is visited by people belonging to all religions and is a standing monument to the spirit of secularism.

The Urus festival (Chandanakkudam festival) is celebrated every year in memory of Sayyidharthunisa Beema Beevi and her son Asshaiku Sayidussaheed Mahin Aboobacker , the saints who are believed to have arrived at Beemapally on the command of Prophet Muhammed to preach the true doctrine of Islam many years ago.

The festival will be declared open when the president of Beemapally Muslim Jama-ath, Beemapally Rasheed, hoists the festival flag. The Beemapally Muslim Jama-ath Chief Imam Alhaj K. M. Hassan Ashraf Al Baquavi will lead the prayers on the occasion.

During the ten-day festival, there will be prayers, reading of holy texts and religious discourses by scholars.

The festival concludes on May 26.
