N. Paramasivan Nair, an iconic cop of yesteryear and the senior-most retired officer of the Kerala Police Force, was laid to rest with full State honours here on Wednesday. Mr. Nair passed away on Tuesday at the age of 95.
Paramasivan Nair, popular as ‘Minnal (lightning) Paramasivan Nair,’ was born in Kanyakumari in 1918 and completed his school education in the government schools at Parassala and Marthandam before earning a BA Hons. degree from the St. Berchman’s College, Changanassery. Starting his career as a clerk in the IG’s Office, Paramasivan Nair became a Sub Inspector in 1947.
His illustrious career, during which he initiated the setting up of the Police Control Room in the State capital and took the lead in introducing scientific investigation methods to the State police, was studded with stories of his valour and courage in tackling notorious criminals. He was also played a key role in bringing in several reforms such as the queue system in the State’s movie halls and other busy public spaces. He retired in 1972 as the Assistant City Police Commissioner in Thiruvananthapuram. He later worked as the chief security officer for Travancore Titanium Products as well. Paramasivan Nair is survived by wife Vagiswari Amma and three children. The funeral at the Thycaud Shanthi Kavadom this morning was attended by several senior police officials, people’s representatives, and well-wishers.
