Traffic disruptions as trees fall on roads

Power outages in many areas

Traffic in various parts of the district went haywire as scores of trees uprooted and fell on the roads on Thursday. Many areas also witnessed power outages for long periods as electric lines got snapped. Traffic signals at various parts of the city were also damaged when tree branches fell on them.

Officials of the Kerala Fire and Rescue Services, police, and the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) were on tenterhooks as they dashed from one place to the other to restore normalcy. The fire services received close to 400 calls, mostly pertaining to uprooted trees, from various parts of the district till evening.

Vehicles damaged

Two vehicles were damaged after a tree fell on them near the Sreekanteswaram temple. A tree that fell on the main road near the Jawahar Balabhavan at Vellayambalam disrupted traffic in the city in the evening. Two cars were damaged as a tree fell on them near the Vydyuthi Bhavan at Pattom. Several trees were uprooted within the premises of the Government Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram. Four cars were damaged. Another car parked near the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Science and Technology was also damaged.

People injured

Billboards and flex boards posed a threat to the safety of motorists and pedestrians. An advertisement board near a school at Sasthamangalam came down, injuring a few people.

Traffic along the Kanjiramkulam-Poovar road was disrupted after two trees fell at the T.V. junction at Poovar. Traffic along roads that lead to the hill regions, including Ponmudi, Palode, Peppara and Vithura, was disrupted.
