Strong winds and heavy rain lashes Thiruvanthapuram district

July 19, 2010 05:47 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 10:34 am IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

Intermittent spells of heavy rain accompanied by strong wind lashed large parts of the district since Monday morning. As many as 15 houses were reported damaged in the Neyyatinkara taluk.

Traffic was blocked for several hours at Thampanoor and Pangode in the city after trees uprooted by the wind and rain fell across the road. The driver and passengers in an auto-rickshaw had a narrow escape when an avenue tree fell onto the vehicle.

Traffic was restored after the Fire and Rescue Services personnel used chain saws to cut away the branches and the heavy trunk. Roads were waterlogged in many places forcing vehicles to take diversions through narrow by-lanes. However, there have been no reports of flooding.

The district administration has opened control rooms at the four taluk offices and the collectorate in the city.
