Skipping valuation: varsity for action against teachers

Non-cooperation by college teachers delays publication of results of many semesters

February 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The University of Kerala has toughened its stance against college teachers who do not turn up for valuation camps. The university has written to the Secretary (higher education) and the Director of Collegiate Education seeking disciplinary action against seven teachers of Mahatma Gandhi College, here.

According to a university press note, action was precipitated by the failure of these teachers to report for valuation duty for the second and fourth semester CBSCC examinations for English language. The press note identified the teachers as Suhas, A. Padminikutty, R. Gopakumar, K.B. Anand, S.R. Raj, Asha K. Nair and N. Lakshmi Priya.

The letter has sought action against these teachers under sections 80 M (1) and (2) of the Kerala University Act 1974. According to the press note, it was the Vice Chancellor who asked for stringent action against errant teachers, after it came to his attention that many examination results were getting delayed because of non-cooperation on the part of teachers.

According to a senior official, the recommendations for action against the seven teachers was only the first step in a series of such requests the university is readying. “It was the MG College file that got ready first. There are other colleges too from where teachers have not turned up for valuation. When the university officials took the answer sheets to the MG College, I am told that they were not accepted,” the official explained.

‘Unilateral action’

K.L. Vivekanandan, spokesperson for the All Kerala Private College Teachers’ Association, told The Hindu that the university’s action against the teachers was an exercise in unilateralism. “The teachers should have been asked to explain their stand,” he pointed out.

The results of the CBCSS first-semester examinations that got over in June last year are yet to be published. The results of the second-semester examinations held in July last year were published only in February 2015. Similarly, the university is yet to schedule the first semester examinations for candidates in the pre-2013 admissions category who failed to clear the first-semester examinations.
