SHRC pulls up Attingal police

April 18, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has come down heavily on the Attingal police, stating that a report submitted by Deputy Superintendent of Police (Attingal) on a complaint of harassment of a visually challenged person by the police was false and biased.

J.B. Koshy, commission Chairman, said probe reports that attempted to protect policemen should not be submitted. The observations were made on a complaint submitted by Shailaj, a 100 per cent visually challenged person and his friend Ashraf. The complainants stated that they were stopped by the Attingal police while they were travelling from Alamcode to Kilimanoor on September 18 last year. The police took Ashraf to the police station. Shailaj, who reached the station to bail out Ashraf, was allegedly humiliated by policemen.

The probe report from the Attingal police contained only the version of the policemen.

The commission has hence decided to hear witnesses directly and will conduct a hearing on May 4
