Motorists can soon look forward for a swanky Regional Transport Office (RTO) in the capital with helpdesks and quick over the counter service once it starts functioning from the fifth floor of the 12-storey bus terminal complex of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) at Thampanoor.

To be housed in 8,000 sq.ft., the modern office of the Motor Vehicles Department will have kiosks, restroom and other citizen-friendly facilities for hundreds who step in daily for various services from the MVD.

The 70-odd personnel working under the RTO will also have a better environs in the new premises.

The government has given its nod for shifting the RTO, Thiruvananthapuram, now housed at the Transport Bhavan, the headquarters of the KSRTC, in Fort to the terminal complex in Thampanoor constructed by the KTDFC. Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society Ltd (ULCCS) has been tasked to do the interior work.

A team led by the State Transport Commissioner, K. Padmakumar and Joint Transport Commissioner and STA Secretary Rajeev Puthalath and Joint Transport Commissioner visited the complex on Monday to see the plan for the proposed modern office.

The ULCCS had been given four months to complete the interior work in the fifth floor, a top MVD official said.

To save complex

The move to shift the RTO office is part of the initiative of the government to save the ₹65-crore complex and help the Kerala Transport Development Finance Corporation (KTDFC) to realise the money invested for building constructed on BOT concept.

The complex was commissioned on February 2, 2014 and the KTDFC was not able to find tenants for the commercial spaces.

The building has escalators, elevators and adequate parking facilities and can be accessed by all sections of motorists. With the office of the RTO moving in, the terminal complex is expected to turn lively.
