The PWD and PWD (NH) roads in Thiruvananthapuram district that were damaged in the monsoon would be repaired and made motorable within three weeks, said Minister for Public Works V.K. Ebrahim Kunju.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday after reviewing the condition of roads, the Minister said Rs.35 crore had been sanctioned to take up 449 works in the district. The officials had promised to complete the repairs in three weeks, he said.
The Kunjalamood section on the Karamana-Poojappura stretch, Mudhavanmughal-Konkalam road, Chiramukku-Iranimuttom road, G.K. Junction-Airport road, Vijayamohini mill-Punnakkamughal road, Nedumangad-Paruthipally section on the Nedumangad-Shorlacode road were the worst damaged areas.
The Minister said repair works on the majority of the sections had begun and the contractors had been given instructions to carry out the repairs if the guarantee period had not exhausted. If they failed to do in the stipulated time, the PWD would carry out the work and reduce money from the security deposit.
The roads would be relaid using BMC after the forthcoming monsoon in October, Mr. Kunju said. The main problem was damage to roads due to digging to lay KWA pipes, he said.
The Minister said the 1-km stretch on the Peroorkada-Vazhayila road developed under the CRIP was yet to be readied as work to lay the KWA pipes was dragging on. The KWA had dug more than the sanctioned width and had not paid the restoration charge, the Minister said.
In addition, Sasthamangalam, Pottakuzhi, G.G Hospital and Marappalam roads had been damaged by the KWA. The Minister said as much as 60 km of road in the district had been affected by the laying of pipes of KWA .
The Public Works Minister said a meeting of KWA officials would be convened and the matter would be taken up with Minister for Water Resources P. J. Joseph.
