Speaker G. Karthikeyan has urged the Kerala Water Authority to revive the proposal for setting up a water-bottling plant at Aruvikkara.
He was speaking at Aruvikkara near here after inaugurating the scheme to lay mild-steep pipelines from Aruvikkara to Peroorkada to replace the existing concrete lines that are burst-prone.
The government is going ahead with a project to convert Aruvikkara into a major centre for tourism, he added.
Eight months
In his address, Minister for Water Resources P. J. Joseph said the new pipeline would be laid in eight months.
Once the JICA drinking water scheme was completed, Thiruvananthapuram would become the city with the highest per-capita availability of drinking water in the country, he said.
Health minister V.S. Sivakumar said the new pipeline would be a lasting solution for the problems caused by the intermittent leaks in the existing line.
According to a press note issued here, the new steel pipeline had a diameter of 1219 mm.
The additional water it brought to the city would benefit 10 lakh people.
