: The prospects of setting up a new domestic terminal for the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, adjacent to the international terminal, have brightened with the government asking the District Collector to negotiate with landowners to acquire 7.41 hectares.

A high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy here on Thursday decided to go in for negotiation to speed up land acquisition even as the local people in Shanghumughom and councillors are up in arms against setting up a new terminal on the city side.

AAI demand

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) had been putting pressure on the State government for providing land as per the 1990 master plan for the world-class terminal complex that has come up near Chakka.

AAI sources said the land was being sought for new domestic terminal, expanding the international terminal and creating ancillary facilities.

The land being sought is adjacent to the new international terminal on the side of the Parvathy Puthanar.

The meeting was attended by Minister for Excise and Airport, K. Babu, Shashi Tharoor, MP, General Manager, AAI, Planning, Joshi, Airport Director, S. Dharmaraj and District Collector Biju Prabhakar.
