Prisoner’s escape bid foiled

March 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:51 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Baiju, 35, accused in over a hundred motorbike theft cases across Kerala and Tamil Nadu and who, over the years, had acquired the moniker of ‘Parakkum Thalika’ or ‘Flying Saucer’ for the speed at which he fled the spot, made an attempt to escape from custody while the police were taking him to a court here on Wednesday.

The Poojappura police said Baiju was in remand and was to be produced in a court at Kattakada. A three-member police party had taken him to catch a bus from the Poojappura Central Prison. Baiju tried to escape when they reached Poojappura Junction by attacking the policemen. He also damaged the windscreen of a car parked there before being overpowered. The police registered another case against him, after which he was produced in court here and remanded in judicial custody.

Baiju, who was arrested along with a stolen motorbike during a vehicle inspection, was an accused in motorbike thefts and in a few house burglary cases registered in police stations stretching from Alappuzha to Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu.
