Pookkalam contest on September 2

First three winners will receive ₹20,000, ₹12,500, ₹7,500

The 10th edition of The Hindu-MetroPlus Pookkalam Contest, powered by Chungath Jewellery, will be held at Government College for Women, Vazhuthacaud, here on September 2.

The contest, first held in 2007, has been witnessing increased participation over the years.

Prizes

The teams adjudged first, second, and third in the contest will receive a purse of ₹20,000, ₹12,500, and ₹7,500, respectively.

Five teams will get ₹1,500 as consolation prize. All teams will be given ₹750 as reimbursement for the cost of flowers. There will be special gifts for all participating teams.

Best attire contest

Participants, both men and women, can compete in the best traditional attire contest.

The best traditionally dressed team and two individual participants will receive prizes from Chungath Jewellery.

There will be other contests for participants and visitors. Visitors will be allowed entry from 2.30 p.m.

All teams should register for the contest in advance, over phone on 0471 2502001 or by e-mail to girish.kr@thehindu.co.in.

Only 50 teams will be allowed for the contest on a first come, first served basis. Each team should have five members, including the team captain.

Three of the members should be women. All team members should be above 15 years of age.

Natural leaves

Natural flowers and leaves alone should be used. Flowers required for the pookkalam contest will have to be arranged by the contestants. Institutions can depute a maximum of three teams for the contest. Harmony of colours and shapes and neatness of the pookkalam will be considered by the jury.

The decision of the jury will be final. Family members of the staff of The Hindu and the sponsors are not allowed to participate. Right of selection of the teams will rest with The Hindu .

Chungath Jewellery is the ‘powered-by’ sponsor for the contest. Poabs Tea and Sprinkle Salt are the associate sponsors.
