Political parties told to remove poll posters

Some parties had removed the materials after polling, many yet to remove them

For the past two months, the posters and banners of candidates of the Assembly elections occupied every nook and cranny in the city.

With the end of the polls, political parties have commenced the removal of such campaign materials.

While many flex boards, banners and such materials were removed by the workers of various parties soon after the conclusion of polling, many continue to remain in certain parts of the city.

Besides banners, festoons that were hung on electric posts at low heights could be seen flying with one of their ends detached.

Safety hazard

A delay in taking them off could pose a safety hazard, particularly with the city witnessing heavy rainfall and winds and low visibility creating problems for motorists.

According to District Collector Biju Prabhakar, the political parties have been requested to remove the campaign materials.

“Several flex boards and such materials were placed by the parties at various points during the final days of campaigning. We have sought the cooperation of all in removing them at the earliest,” he said.

He added that there would be no directives to remove graffiti that had been prepared on walls.

Corporation’s diktat

All paintings for campaign were done in private properties. Under the circumstances, the removal of such paintings could not be ordered on legal grounds.

The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has also called upon the political parties to ensure the removal of the materials.

Bad weather

Mayor V.K. Prasanth said the directive had been issued in the wake of the inclement weather with an eye on ensuring public safety.

Besides campaign materials, the Mayor also ordered commercial establishments and various organisations to get rid off advertisement and other boards, which were placed illegally.

Any delay in complying with the order would result in the Corporation adopting arrangements to undertake the activity without further notice. Establishments that had placed such boards would also be held responsible for any unforeseen consequences created due to the presence of such materials.
