They burgle and burgle…

For the two burglars, who operate separately, jail is just a temporary break

Two men, notorious for the number of burglaries they masterminded and both arrested by the City police in early November, though separately, had one similarity.

No number of arrests could stop them. They just kept on stealing the moment they were out in the open.

Bijuraj alias Chengannur Satheesh had managed to steal at his will across the State and still evade the police for over two years till his arrest in November 2013. That time, it was the theft of a bishop’s ring at Sasthamangalam that landed him in the police net.

Bijuraj was slightly careless when it came to leaving trails, since the police managed to find his fingerprints in most of the burglaries he was involved in.

Yet, he managed to remain elusive. After his arrest in November last, he managed to get bail, and struck again, interestingly with an increased concentration in Sasthamangalam.

He is suspected to have committed over five burglaries in the area, returning to hideouts in Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Kozhikode before being arrested, again in November this year.

Compared to Bijuraj, Shashi alias Kavanadu Shashi, arrested a few days after Bijuraj this month, appeared to be in a hurry.

The police said Shashi committed over 10 burglaries across five districts in three months, all after getting out on bail after being arrested in connection with another burglary.

The police said Shashi, 37, of Anchalummoodu near Kollam, who was arrested along with another person who helped him in hiding after the burglaries and also with vehicles, was jailed in April in connection with a chain-snatching case. He, however, got out on bail in early August.

He then allegedly carried out burglaries in Adichellannur near Chathannur of Kollam, Nediyavilakom near Marthandam, Tamil Nadu, and Mannar and Chengannur in Alappuzha district as well.

The police said Shashi also masterminded burglaries and chain-snatchings in Kudappanakunnu, Vizhinjam, near the Raj Bhavan at Kowdiar, and at Vattiyurkavu this month.

The person arrested along with Shashi was identified as Ajith, 43, who runs a medical shop at Vengannur near Kovalam.

A laptop, camera, watches and other electronic appliances that Shashi stole with Ajith’s help have been recovered.

The police, who also recovered four gold chains from them, said efforts were on to trace other people suspected to have helped or been part of the burglaries that Shashi carried out in the brief ‘interval’ he got.
