April 22, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The district unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has said that the police were falsely implicating party activists who have participated in agitations during the past five years.

In a statement here, district secretary of the CPI G.R. Anil said the police had arrested a large number of activists associated with student and youth organisations of the party after the announcement of the Assembly elections.

‘Without warrants’

Several workers were arrested during midnight, without producing warrants and depriving them of their legal rights.

The arrested persons had participated in political agitations and demonstrations in the past.

Even those who had never participated in any protest were falsely implicated after election was declared, he said in the statement.

‘To weaken campaigning’

The party said the police action was aimed at preventing workers from actively participating in election campaign.

The police should stop victimising party activists, the statement added.
