April 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:51 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Security forces in the city were on tenterhooks for nearly seven hours on Sunday after labourers cleaning a pond attached to Sreepadam Palace, adjacent to the north gate of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, fished out a sack containing what appeared to be five pipe bombs.

Latest reports indicated that the explosive devices could be at least a decade old and could have been ammunition used in cannons. The sack was found around 10.30 a.m. by labourers employed by the Department of Archaeology, after clearing around 1.5 ft of mud from the pond.
