In the wake of the deterioration of waterbodies into garbage dumps, the State Human Rights Commission has sought information regarding the measures planned by the government to conserve water resources like streams, ponds, lakes and canals.

The panel has said in a directive that government officials have shown deep negligence in protecting waterbodies, as a result of which resources like the lotus pond at Kadhinamkulam near Kazhakuttam have become garbage dumps and centres of antisocial activity.

Dumping of waste

Similar conditions prevail at Mukkola and Vizhinjam. In some areas, streams have been filled in by meat waste and surroundings polluted by the dumping of waste in open sewers.

Those responsible for protecting the health of the public are being non-responsive, the panel said, according to a press note issued here on Friday

The panel has directed the District Collector and city Corporation Secretary to submit explanations regarding the situation within three weeks.
