Shashi Tharoor, MP, gets on the new escalator on platform two and three of the Central railway station in the city on Wednesday.

Senior citizens and the differently-abled disembarking from trains on platform two and three of the Central railway station here can now skip the staircase to venture out, courtesy an escalator installed at a cost of Rs.78.50 lakh.

Unlike the escalators on platform one of the railway station, the escalator commissioned on Wednesday by Shashi Tharoor, MP, will be restricted for going up from the platform.

Divisional Railway Manager Sunil Bajpai; Additional Divisional Railway Manager P. Mahesh; and senior Railway officials were present during the commissioning.

The escalators are equipped with sensors and move automatically when the passengers reach it. The escalators will be of huge relief to the elderly and the physically challenged. To come down to the platform, passengers will have to use the steps.

The railway station, which is being upgraded to a world-class facility, now has three of the six escalators sanctioned by Railways. The two escalators set up near the foot overbridge on platform one provide connectivity to platforms 2, 3, and 4.

A senior Railway official told The Hindu that work on the fourth escalator had begun. It would be installed on platform 4/5 and would be used only for going up.
