Poet-activist Sugathakumari has attributed the prevailing crisis of water shortage and environmental degradation to the development model that was being undertaken with scant regard for nature.

Speaking after inaugurating ‘Ammayam Neyyarinayi’, a clean-up drive of Neyyar river organised by Gandhi Haritha Samrudhi on Monday, Ms. Sugathakumari said development that was in harmony with nature must be our goal in order to ensure the welfare of mankind. All India Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi chairman P. Gopinathan Nair administered a pledge to conserve ecology on the occasion.

The goals of the campaign included preventing further pollution of the Neyyar river, end to sand-mining, construction of a ‘green wall’ consisting of various plants, including bamboo and reed, implementation of water supply schemes by ensuring that water from the Neyyar river did not drain out unutilised to the sea, and create awareness among people of various walks of life.

As part of the campaign, the Neyyar protection rally will recommence from Aruvippuram on Monday.
